amazonian birds painting

Three Hoatzins

Arturo Laime .  2014

This painting is based on an encounter I had that took place many years ago, walking deep in the Amazon jungle. I saw with my eyes a group of Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) at the top of a tree. This bird is an extraordinary species, that many scientists relate to the so-called “missing links” between dinosaurs and birds. The hoatzin, as chick, has claws in his wings, which he uses to climb in the branches. His shape and colours make me think about the Phoenix, this mythical bird that at the end of his life reborn again.
