OVERVIEW
Ritual, Faith and Resilience was a curated group exhibition bringing together six Peruvian artists at Ausstellungsraum Eulengasse in Frankfurt am Main. Curated by Arturo Laime, the exhibition took as its starting point the role of ritual in everyday life: the small, often private acts through which individuals and communities seek to influence the course of their lives, whether through gestures of luck, cleansing, devotion or hope.
In Peru, ritual remains a living and visible part of daily culture, a channel through which desire, faith and resilience are given form. The exhibition asked what happens when this understanding of ritual is placed in dialogue with a different cultural context, and how six artists working across painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking and paper cut might each interpret the theme through their own practice.
CURATORIAL PROCESS
Bringing the exhibition together involved sustained coordination across Peru and Germany. Artists were selected not only for the strength of their individual practices but for how their work would speak to each other within a single space — a curatorial process focused on coherence as much as quality. Some artists, such as Mónica Pasco, were invited because Laime was already familiar with and drawn to their work; others, such as Pancho Guerra García, were practitioners whose work he had followed and admired over time. Works arrived in Frankfurt through different routes — some shipped ahead of the exhibition, others carried personally by the artists. Access to the exhibition space was made possible through Laime’s membership at Ausstellungsraum Eulengasse, an artist-run space in Frankfurt am Main.
Visitors and colleagues described the exhibition as well-curated and refreshing — a departure from what is typically shown in Frankfurt, bringing the colour, design language and visual culture of Peru into dialogue with a German audience largely unfamiliar with it.
Beyond the exhibition itself, the project reflects a broader commitment that runs through Laime’s curatorial work: building lasting connections between artists across Peru and Germany. Several relationships formed through Ritual, Faith and Resilience have continued beyond the exhibition — including Mónica Pasco’s involvement in Doppelgänger, the exchange project currently in development. For Laime, exhibitions are not isolated events but points of contact in an ongoing exchange between two artistic communities.
THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition presented around fifty works spanning a wide range of media and formats. Arturo Laime exhibited both painting and sculpture, while Pancho Guerra García presented painting. Ignacio Macha contributed drawings, Cecilia Carreón showed printmaking, and Mónica Moscol presented sculptural work. Mónica Pasco’s contribution took the form of intricate paper-cut pieces, a technique that brought a distinct material lightness to the exhibition. Across the works, recurring motifs of masks, ritual objects and symbolic forms created points of dialogue between otherwise very different practices.
OUTCOMES
The exhibition culminated in a public artist talk on its closing day, open to all visitors. According to the gallery, Ritual, Faith and Resilience was among the best-attended exhibitions in Ausstellungsraum Eulengasse’s recent history. A press release announcing the exhibition was distributed to local media ahead of the opening.
